“In stop-motion animation, our students become the directors and animators as they learn camera and editing techniques, storytelling skills, and creative confidence while bringing their ideas to life.”
~Natalia Morgan, FC Academy

When someone mentions stop motion filmmaking, my thoughts automatically go to old favorites such as Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Gumby, and newer favorites like Disney’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. Stop motion filming is an animation technique where you take individual photos of objects, slightly moving them between each shot, then string the photos together to create the illusion of movement, like a digital flipbook.

Tri-Town Council is bring this classic film technique to Tri-Town youth through the Horizon’s Program: Stop Motion Film Making. The FC Academy brought its expertise and materials to a Tri-Town elementary school this past fall. Their stop-motion animation class teaches students the principles of animation and then allows students to produce their own short films using everyday objects.

In the TTC Horizon’s program, students met once a week for 8 weeks to learn and create their short films. Students even had the opportunity to experience editing and directing the films. The students also learned more about the art of storytelling. And if you missed the last session, TTC is offering this opportunity to students again this winter!

Left: Tips on how to write a story. Right: Golden rules for every class.
